After their excellent four points gained from away games against Harrow Borough and North Leigh Winchester suffered their second successive home defeat as they wy went down 3-1 to leaders who maintained their lead at the top of the table. However as in the Poole match Winchester made a promising start to the game, but fell behind to quality play from a player with football league experience.
Truro striker Tyler Harvey went into this match having scored in all of their previous three league games and he has played 50 games for Plymouth Argyle where he played alongside current Truro boss Paul Wotton whom some people on the South Coast will remember for the three years he spent as a player with Southampton. On Saturday Harvey scored two and played a part in the other Truro goal and bought his goal tally as a Truro player into three figures.
Winchester announced an unchanged starting line-up from Tuesday with their six substitutes including Simba Mlambo who was making a welcome return from injury.
Winchester made a bright start to the game with Alex MacAllister having an effort blocked by goalkeeper James Hamon at close range, Claudio Herbert heading just over following a Dan King cross and Warren Bentley having a shot deflected for a corner. However Truro were holding the ball well up front and their incisive forward play was always a threat. The visitors took the lead when Tyler Harvey was able to break clear of the Winchester defence following an excellent through ball and take his time and slot home. it required a good save from Charlie Philpott in the Winchester goal from Andrew Neal to deny Truro a second just before half time. However Winchester’s rhythm was disrupted when Warren Bentley who was influential in the early stages of the game had to go off injured, although they had Dan Neild to bring on as his replacement.
From a Conall Bark cross that eluded everyone, Silvano Obeng was close to getting a decisive touch. However Truro continued to look dangerous going forward and they scores a second in the 62nd minute when they were awarded a free kick and an excellent dummy by Tyler Harvey allowed William Dean to score directly from this free kick with an excellently struck effort.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men in quick succession with Truro’s Daniel Sullivan being the first to go in the 67th minute and Archie Wilcox receiving a second yellow card three minutes later, although it appeared that Wilcox’s first yellow card was a case of mistaken identity. However with cases of red cards in the football league being overturned when mistaken identity is involved it is hoped that Wiloox can escape suspension.
Truro however made it 3-0 in the 76th minute when substitute Oliver Knowles broke clear and set up Tyler Harvey to score his second goal of the game.
However despite being three goals down Winchester stage a late rally with the game opening up with both teams reduced to 10 men. Max Smith forces a good save from Hamon In the final minute of the game Hamon fouls Silvano Obeng and Obeng takes the penalty himself and scores. Both teams had chances in added on time with Obeng heading just over following a cross from Jamie Barron and a couple of good blocks by Winchester defenders keeping Truro out at the other end. Winchester in the second half introduced Josh Bertie and Simba Mlambo with the players they replaced being Cludio Herbert and Conall Bark.
Truro have now won all three league games against Winchester also winning 5-0 at Truro and 2-0 at Winchester in the 2998/09 season. However in the other meeting between the clubs from the county towns of Hampshire and Cornwall Winchester won an F A Cup tie on this ground 4-0.
On Saturday Winchester are at home to Metropolitan Police and on Bank Holiday Monday are at home to Gosport Borough.
