For the second successive Saturday Winchester suffered a 2-1 away defeat against a team challenging for a play-off place, but they gave a good account of themselves against Dorchester and were a bit unlucky to lose. As a result of Yate's win at Gosport Winchester drop one place in the table and this was the first away match hg they have lost this season after taking the lead. For Dorchester this was their third league win in a row and as a result they move into the playoff positions.
For Winchester Charlie Philpott returned to the team in goal, while the versatile Pip Nolan wore the number 11 shirt, with Callum Chugg returning to the central defence and Lerone Plummer who like ollie Griggs was a former Dorchester player dropping to the bench. On the other side of the coin Keith Emmerson and Kieran Douglas who were a recent centre back pairing at Winchester were both in the Dorchester starting eleven, while another former Winchester player Ollie Balmer was on the Dorchester substitutes bench. The two managers Craig Davis and Glenn Howes were former playing colleagues.
In an end to end to end start Pip Nolan had an early effort cleared at the expense of a corner, while at the other end Harvey Bradbury son of Eastleigh manager Lee Bradbury had a header following a cross from Matt Neale saved by Philpott. Alfie Stanley also had an effort that went wide, but warren Bentley forced Ryan Hall to save at the expense of a corner, with Simba Mlambo and Max Smith also having off target efforts.
Winchester took the lead on the half hour when following a cross from Danny King Simba Mlambo was able to score at close range. However Dorchester drew level six minutes later when Charlie Gunson was able to lob Charlie Philpott and able to head into the empty net. Dorchester seemed to be boosted by the goal and Alfie Stanley who played briefly for Portsmouth hit the post having been set up by Keith Emmerson. However right at the end of he game's first period Simba Mlambo came close to restoring Winchester's lead.
In the second half Warren Bentley put in a cross that a Dorchester defender cleared at the expense of a corner which with Simba Mlambo lurking he could easily have turned into his own net, while at the other end Archie Willcox made an excellent goal-line clearance with Philpott beaten and Callum Buckley headed over following a corner.
Winchester then had an excellent spell of play with an acrobatic effort from Ollie Griggs who was set up by Simba Mlambo forcing Ryan Hall to tip over the bar and Mlambo forcing Hall to tip another effort round the post for a corner. With Mlambo also coming close with a header from a corner it was beginning to look as though Winchester were in the ascendancy. However in the 76th minute when substitute Shaq Gwenge who had only just come onto the field set up Harvey Bradbury and although Charlie Philpott was able ti save the striker's first effort Bradbury was able to follow up and score the all important second goal. Three minutes later Philpott kept Winchester in the game with an excellent save from Charlie Gunson.
Winchester introduced all three substitutes with Claudio Herbert replacing Jamie Barron and later Max Smith and Pip Nolan being replaced by Henry Brooks and Lerone Plummer, while also in the latter stages Ollie Balmer came on for Dorchester, However although Griggs almost got a decisive touch to a cross from Plummer and Charlie Philpott who came up for a corner in added on time was only just off target with a header Winchester despite applying pressure in the latter stages cf the game against a good Dorchester team could not score the equalizer.
Winchester are at home to Yate on Saturday and on the following Tuesday make the fourth attempt to play their Hampshire Senior Cup tie with Bashley, this time at Bashley's ground. This means that the away fixture with Plymouth Parkway will have to be rescheduled as will the home fixture with Harrow Borough which was due to be played this Tuesday (17th January), but is off due to Harrow playing their F A Trophy tie with Halifax which was postponed oi Saturday.
Winchester under 23 team were leading their Andover counterparts 2-0 at half time before adverse weather conditions caused the match to be abandoned.
