Winchester City's final home match of the season saw them lose 3-0 to Hanwell Town who moved into 15th position one place above Winchester. The only previous time the two clubs had met was in the 2006/07 season when both matches were won by the home team, but in this campaign the away team had been victorious in both of the two matches between the clubs.
Hanwell like Winchester were promoted via the playoffs last season and both of the clubs were able to ensure that they would finish outside the relegation places over the weekend and some of the Hanwell supporters gave the game a party atmosphere by dressing up in various costumes such as the cartoon duo of Luigi and Super Mario, the Penguin and many other costumes.
The two clubs could also be tenuously linked by the fact that Hanwell Town were formed in 1920 by a group of Geordies and the current chairman is a passionate Geordie. Hanwell are in fact as a result nicknamed The Geordies.
As for the game itself Winchester made three changes to the starting line-up from Monday's game at Salisbury with Jordi Valero coming in for Charlie Philpott in goal, and Callum Chugg and Jack Torniainen coming in for Mark Jamison and I K Hill with Jamison and Hill dropping to the bench.
Early in proceedings Jamie Barron has an off target effort while Hanwell's Jack Hutchinson shot narrowly wide having seen that Jordi Valero was slightly off his line, From a Harry Rush free kick Anthony Cheshire's header at close range following a Harry Rush free kick was well saved by Valero. At the other end Warren Bentley shot narrowly wide and Ollie Balmer put in a cross that no-one could a decisive touch to.
Hanwell though took the lead in the 19th minute when Harry Rush set Kain Adom clear and he was able to lob Valero to open the scoring. Hanwell's Keano Robinson then got in a crucial block to deny Max Smith. Ollie Balmer and Lewis Cole have shots saved for their respective sides, while Calum Duffy heads just over from a cross from Cole.
However Hanwell went 2-0 up three minutes before half time when Rush's corner was not cleared and Adom was on hand to score his second from close range.
Being 2-0 down at at the interval Winchester bought on Oli Bailey and I K Hill for Jack Torniainen and Jamie Barron at the interval. Oil Bailey forces a save from Max Merrick in the Hanwell goal, while I K Hill went on a good run before he is closed down by the Hanwell defence. Winchester bought on Henry Brooks to replace Callum Chug for their third substitution of the afternoon, but Hanwell substitute Jacob Gardiner-Smith becomes the substitute who comes closest to scoring in the game's Ollie Balmer has a shot saved by Merrick, but with five minutes to go Hanwell make the game safe when Adom's cross is headed home by Dwayne Duncan who is then booked for his goal celebrations. There is no further action of note and Winchester are beaten in their final home of the season, but in recent weeks they have done extremely well to move clear of the drop zone.
Winchester play their final two matches if the season when they are away to Plymouth Parkway on Tuesday and away to Tiverton on Saturday, with a coach being arranged for the latter game.
