Winchester were beaten 3-1 by newly promoted Sholing in a local derby which represented for home team their first league match of the season after their match against Walton and Hersham was frustratingly abandoned with them 2-0 in the ascendancy. Both Winchester and Sholing have made good progress in recent seasons and 10 years ago the clubs were playing each other in the Wessex League, two levels below their current status.
Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from the Walton and Hersham match with Warren Bentley and Pip Nolan the two goalscorers in that game being replaced by Callum Chugg and I K Hill. There were two changes to the substitutes bench from the previous week with Sam Steel and Dan Walster replacing Jack Torrnianen and Mark Jamison.
Shoing fielded in Dan and Byron Mason two of the trio of brothers who had played a significant part in their recent history, plus Jake Heeketh a player with over 60 league appearances to his name who was recently replaced by Eastleigh. Goalkeeper Ryan Gosney and Pete Castle are former Winchester players with Castle holding the record of being the youngest player to play for Reading in the football league.
In the 1st minute Charlie Philpott in the Winchester goal makes a good save from Jake Adams, while at the other end aa Sholing defender makes an important block to deny Conor Lynch.
Winchester have an appeal turned down for a challenge on Max Smith, while good defending from Castle keeps out Jordan Rose. Winchester are forced to an early change with Henry Brooks replacing the injured Trevor Caborn. However Winchester fell behind in the 13th minute when with Wayne Robinson in pursuit a back pass bounces over Charlie Philpott's foot for a soft goal. Four minutes later it was 2-0 when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Wayne Robinson and this was converted by Dan Mason.
This left Winchester with a mountain to climb, but they kept battling, with Charlie Philpott making an excellent save to deny Jake Cope and a minute later they had an excellent save to deny Jake Cope, and they had an excellent chance to reduce the arrears when they were awarded a penalty, but Conor Lynch's spot kick is saved by Gosney. Towards the end of the first half Sholing come close when a corner produces a goalmouth scramble.
It remains 2-0 at the interval and Winchester respond at the start of the second half by replacing defender Jordan Rose with forward Tommy Wright. Sholing also make two substitutions at the start of the second half, but Wright almost makes a significant contribution soon after coming on, but his effort is wide.
Wright also faces a save from Gosney and Winchester are certainly applying the pressure early in the second half, but they were caught on the break in the 56th minute when Dan Mason crossed for Jake Cope t score at close range.
Winchester made their third and final substitution with Dan Jones replacing Jamie Barron and soon after coming on Jones has one efforts saved and another shot just wide. In the 79th minute Sholing are reduced to 10 men when Jake Hesketh receives a second yellow card.
At the start of added on time Max Smith also received a red card, and further still into added on time Henry Brooks scored a consolation goal from the end of the box, but by then it was too late to influence the result of the game.
After travelling to Dorchester on Tuesday, Winchester are at home to AFC Totton on Saturday.
