After their excellent midweek victory at Dorchester Winchester suffered a disappointing 6-0 home defeat against AFC Totton which represents their heaviest defeat since being promoted to the Premier Division of the Southern League.
AFC Totton were promoted from the lower division of the Southern League as champions and are generally regarded as a club with a lot of potential and this was their third win in four league games. Their manager is Jimmy Ball who the son of football legend Alan Ball who has played for and managed Southampton and played in England's 1966 world cup winning team of 1966,. Their hat-trick hero on Saturday was Scott Rendell, a player who has over 100 football league appearances to his name and had played for several local clubs including Eastleigh.
The match was given added spice by the fact that Winchester's Tommy Wright, Pip Nolan and Callum Baughan who were all in their starting line-up, and manager Craig Davis were all former AFC Totton players, while on the other side of the coin AFC Totton's Lewis Noice and Adam Tomasso are former Winchester players.WincheseFC Totton achieved a comfortable 6-0 win in their local derby with Winchester, winning 6-0 with three goals in each half and Scott Rendell netting a second half hat-trick.
Winchester had to make two enforced changes from Tuesday with Archie Willcox returning to the side in place of the injures Danny King, and Warren Bentley replacing the suspended Max Smith, but otherwise the starting line-up was the same as Tuesday. Trevor Caborn returning from injury was on the Winchester substitutes bench.
Early in proceedings Jasper Sheik in the Winchester goal was tested by two efforts from Benny Read. At the other end Simba Mlambo headed just wide following a free kick from Ollie Balmer. However midway through the first half the visitors took the lead when Matthew Burrows scored with a low shot into the bottom corner. Within quarter of an hour of taking the lead AFC Totton had scored twice more. Firstly when Leon Maloney's free kick on the left hand side which deceived everyone and then the same player scored with a spectacular strike from more than 30 yards. Towards the end of the first half in what was probably Winchester's best attack of the half Tommy Wright headed just wide following a cross from Simba Mlambo, but the home side were still 3-0 behind at the interval.
At the interval Callum Baughan on a yellow card and a final warning was replaced by Trevor Caborn, Early in the second half Warren Bentley forced a save from Noice as Winchester tried to get back into the game, However at the end Sheikh made an excellent save from Rendell, but shortly afterwards a Matthew Burrows cross was headed across goal by Luke Hallett for Rendell to head home at close range. It became 5-0 midway through the half when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Matthew Burrows and Rendell converted the resulting penalty.
After the fifth goal went in Winchester made their final two substitutions with Conor Lynch and I K Hill replacing Tommy Wright and Warren Bentley, and shortly afterwards Caborn forced a good save from Noice.
In the 72nd minute it became 6-0 when Maloney set up Rendell who completed his hat-trick with a shot that went in off the post. That was the end of the scoring, although both teams had attacks later in the game with Caborn shooting into the side netting and Mlambo shooting wide.
Winchester are away to Hayes and Yeading on Saturday and on the Bank Holiday Monday are at home to Salisbury.
