Winchester City achieve an excellent 2-1 away win against a Chesham United side who went into the match top of the table having won all seven league games. The result means that if they can get at least three points from the one or two games they have in hand of the teams above them in the table Winchester will move into the top half of the table, while Chesham are replaced by Gosport Borough at the top of the table,
In addition to their league results Chesham are one of 10 teams from the division in which they play in to reach the 3rd qualifying round of the F A Cup with Winchester, Bracknell, Poole, AFC Totton, Merthyr Town, Didcot, Gosport, Salisbury and Hungerford being the others. The F A Cup is a competition in which they have previously beaten Bristol Rovers and they are former F A Amateur Cup finalists. Last season they finished fifth in this division, but lost to Bracknell in the playoffs.
Winchester bought in new signing from Poole Luke Cairney and he became the fourth goalkeeper to represent the Winchester first team his season, Other than that Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Tuesday with Simba Mlambo replacing Warren Bentley up front abs Archie Willcox coming in for Jordan Rose in defence. Rose was amongst the five substitutes.
The first half saw little goalmouth action, Early on the hone side's leading scorer Ricardo German had an effort blocked, while toward the end of the half I K Hill had an effort comfortably saved by Zaki Qualah in the home goal and Trevor Caborn had an effort deflected over, but Winchester were looking very solid against a team that had had scored at least twice in all their victories this season.
Early in the second half Chesham bought on new signing Bruno Andrade as substitute, Andrade has 167 football league appearances including one in the Premiership with Queens Park Rangers and 87 National League appearances to his name,. Shoertly afterwards Ricardo German hit the post, but three minutes later the same player made no mistake slotting home after being set up by Andrade.
Soon afterwards make their first substitution of the afternoon when Ollie Balmer replaces I K Hill. With quarte of an hour remaining Winchester drew level when a penalty was awarded for a foul by Steve Brown on Trevor Caborn and Pip Nolan converted the resulting penalty. It was Winchester's fifth penalty of the season and the first they had converted.
In the 81st minute Winchester make a second substitution with Conor Lynch replacing Tommy Wright and a minute lynch scored with virtually his first touch after coming on. as he slots home.
After going behind Chesham try and pile on the pressure, but despite this and seven minutes of added on time they fail to seriously trouble Cairney in the Winchester foal and in fact Winchester who in the 88th minute Winchester who made their thirds and final substitution with Jordan Rose replacing Caborn could easily have had another penalty for a tackle on Lynch.
Winchester are at home to Maidstone United in the F A Cup on Saturday and if there is no F A Cup replay are at home to Plymouth Parkway on Tuesday week.
