Winchester mad3e the long midweek trip to face a Merthyr Town team who went into match in the playoff positions with 8 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses from 12 league games with their only defeats being against teams above them in the table.However Winchester achieved a superb 2-1 away win coming from behind to achieve their success and making it 4 away wins and 1 draw from 6 away games.
Merthyr are managed by former Cinderford and Yate boss Paul Michael who previously led Yate to seventh position in this division and last season Merthyr finished a respectable 9th under his stewardship with four points from the two matches against Winchester.
For this match Winchester made four changes to the starting line-up from Saturday with captain Jamie Barron, Max Smith, Jordan Rose and scorer of the last minute goal on Saturday Conor Lynch replacing I K Hill, Ollie Balmer, Josh Bertie and Mark Jamison. Josh McCormick was switched to left back with Ollie Griggs at right back.
Merthyr made a bright start with Nik Rhodes having a header save early on, but they took the lead in the 5th minute when Tom Handley scores with a header following a good cross into the box. Pryce made further saves from Rhodes and Olly Mehew, However after the early Merthyr pressure Winchester drew level in the 32nd minute through Josh McCormick who scored with a wonderful strike into the top corner having won possession and moved forward with the ball. Towards the end of the first half Pryce made a further good save from Kelran Evans, but it was all square at the interval. with Merthyr having the better of things, but Winchester showing resilience to get back in the game.
Early in the second half Winchester came close to taking the lead, but apart from a free kick from Merthyr's Liam Angel that hit the bar there was not much goalmouth action for the majority of the second half until Jamie Barron scored a late winner for Winchester scoring in the 87th minute to complete a memorable comeback, and for Barron it was his third goal in the last two last two matches he has played in It was sweet revenge for Winchester who lost last season's corresponding match also played kin midweek 5-2 with Handley again Merthyr's first scorer.
