Winchester again suffered disappointment om home soil and they have now picked up just five points from seven home games as opposed to 17 from 8 on the road as two first half goals gave Hendon a 2-victgory..
Both Winchester and Hendon finished in the lower half of the table, but are having much better seasons this time around with more wins than losses to their name in the current campaign, Hendon moved up to 7th with this win, but Winchester can match their current points total if they get six or more points from their three games in hand. Hendon though during the month of November had recorded league wins against Merthyr and Walton and Hersham and had progressed in the F A Trophy with victory against Eastbourne Borough of the National League South.
Hendon are a long established club well known for their F A Cup and F A Amateur Cup exploits in the 1960's and 1970's, but last season was the first time the two clubs had met in league action. The Hendon manager is Lee Allinson whose father Ian scored 98 football league goals as a result of playing in the colours of Colchester, Arsenal and Luton.
The Winchester starting line-up had three changes to the starting line-up from their last fixture which was at Hungerford 11 days ago with Simba Mlambo, Dan Jones and Ollie Griggs the three players substituted in that match making way for Trevor Caborn, Warren Bentley and Ollie Balmer. There was also a return to the substitutes bench for I K Hill.
Winchester started off the brighter of the two brighter of the two teams with an effort from Warren Bentley hitting the top of the cross bar and Bentley heading just wide from a cross by Ollie Balmer, and the home team came close on a couple of other occasions. Although Max Brosnan put in a cross that no-one could get a decisive touch to. It was somewhat against the run of play that Hendon took the lead in the 21st minute when Billy Leonard converted a cross from Kai Brosnan. Shortly after going behind Winchester going behind Winchester replaced the injured Pip Nolan with Jordan Rose.
Winchester continued to press and from free kicks centre backs Jordan Rose and Mark Jamison forced saves from Loris Marcimain in the Hendon goal, while Tommy Wright had an effort narrowly wide. At the other end Hendon had a goal disallowed for a foul in the penalty area.
The next goal however came Hendon's way in added on time in the first half when Sam Adenola scored following a Winchester defensive mix up at a free kick. In the first half there was still time for Hendon's Joseph White to receive a second yellow card for a foul on Trevor Caborn. Both of White's yellow cards came for fouls on Caborn shortly after Hendon scored. In the final minute of added on time Ollie Balmer came c,lose to scoring following a free kick.
In the second half Max Smith had an effort that went narrowly wide and Tommy Wright had an effort deflected forb a corner. By the time the last 20 minutes of the game had begun Winchester hade made their final two substitutions of the day with Conor Lynch replacing Warren Bentley and I K Hill coming on for Ollie Balmer.
Winchester certainly piled on the pressure in the final 20 minutes of the game and Macimain in the Hendon goal had to make good saves from Tommy Wright, I K Hill and Jamie Barron and Jamison having an effort brilliantly blocked at the expense of a corner. Hendon certainly defended well in the game's second period especially with only 10 men on the field, but the game could have been so different if with 8 minutes remaining Winchester had not had a goal controversially disallowed for offside, at a time when a goal could have changed the whole complexion of the game.
However it was not to be Winchester's day. On Saturday they are away to Poole and on the following Tuesday are at home to Bracknell.
Former club physio Steve Holloway whose son Ryan played for the club has sadly passed away.
