Winchester's fourth attempt to plat their match with Walton and Hersham saw them emerge 2-1 winners and achieve only their second home league win of the season and move back into the top half of the table. They came from behind to achieve victory in Tuesday's game having previously led 2-0 in the natch abandoned on the opening day of the season. Newly promo0ted Walton and Hersham went into this match having having achieved 8 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses into this match having achieved 8 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses from 16 league games although their recent form has not been so good.
Walton and Hershan arrived in this league by successive promotions, but they have had a good history. In 1972/723 they won the F A Amateur Cup in the second but last year of the competition and in the following season they beat a Brighton and Hove Albion managed by Brian Clough 4-0 away from home in the F A Cup. At the time of these successes they were managed by Allen Batsford who later took Wimbledon into the football league for the first time. Their current striker Eddie Simon came to National prominence when he hit four hat-tricks in four successive games.
Winchester made three changes t the starting line-up from Saturday with new signing Stuart Mott replacing the injured Pip Nolan and Dan Jones and Simba Mlambo coming in for Ollie Balmer and Warren Bentley with Balmer and Bentley on the substitutes bench. Moot was a new signing from Bemerton Heath Harlequins and he was previously at the club in the 2016/17 season when he scored a goal in a 4-3 victory against Sghortwood.
Walton And Hersham had some pacy attackers and early in the game Trae Cook-Appiah shot just wide with a powerful strike following a good run and at the other end Trevor Caborn who was very much a threat for Winchester also shot narrowly wide after a good run. Having conceded the first goal for the seventh home league game out of eight and failed to convert several chances in Saturday's home against Hendon it was a test of Winchester's character which has been so much in evidence this season as to whether they could bounce back.
After this early setback Winchester began to create chances with Caborn very much in the thick of things. He created chances for Jones twice and Mlambo once, but on each occasion Walton and Hersham goalkeeper Liam Allen was not seriously troubled.
Just as one began to sense it might not be Winchester's day again Caborn set up Max Smith to score the equalizer in the 34th minute. Before half time Caborn has an effort that went just wide After their early impetus Walton and Hersham did not threaten much in the remainder of the half and on the balance of play Winchester should have really been ahead at the interval.
Winchester continued to have more of the game than the visitors after the break, but the visitors were defending resolutely and Winchester were unable to convert their dominance into goals with Dan Jones putting in a cross that no-one could get a decisive touch to, and Tommy Wright shooting just wide from the edge of the penalty area, However in the 77th minute \another effort froe the edge of the area from Wright is not only on target, but the power of the shot gives Allen little chance of keeping the ball out of the net.
Shortly after the goal Allen made a couple of good saves to keep Winchester out, but the visitors came more into the game, but Winchester players made some good interceptions and they won plenty of 50-50 balls. Luke Cairney at times came out of his area to break up Walton and Hersham attacks as Winchester won a valuable three points.
In the second half Winchester introduced Ollie Balmer, Ollie Griggs and Conor Lynch as substitutes, with Caborn, Jamie Barron and Tommy Wright the players going off.
