Winchester City achieved their biggest ever win as a Southern League Premier Division club and obtained their first home clean sheet pf the season when they beat Bracknell Town 5-0, surpassing their efforts in beating Beaconsfield at 4-0 at home last season and their 4-0 win at Dorchester earlier in the season. 4-0 win against . They move level on points with Bracknell having played one game fewer and it is nice to be in the top half of the table with 17 matches played.
Bracknell went into this match three points ahead of Winchester having played one game more, with only one of their 16 league games being drawn, hey had won 4 of their last 5 league games with Joseph Grant scoring in all four of these victories. They also reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup, for the second successive season where they lost to Cambridge United.
Last season they finished runners up ibn this division, but lost the playoff final to Truro in a season in which they scored 100 league goals, with no other team reached the 90 mark.
Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Saturday with Pip Nolan returning from injury replacing the injured Stuart Mott.
The first half of the game saw some pacy attacking play from both sides, but for the first 44 minutes neither goalkeeper had to make a save of note. Trevor Caborn for Winchester and Jordan Espirit for Bracknell did force saves from the opposing goalkeeper, but their efforts were comfortably dealt with. Nana Owusu also shot narrowly wide. However right at the end of the half Trevor Caborn got the decisive touch after Mark Jamison flicked on a long throe from Pip Nolan. Bracknell had a couple of dangerous attacks, but it was still 1-0 at the interval
Pip Nolan had an excellent chance to extend Winchester's lead early in the second half, but his penalty awarded for a foul by the Bracknell goalkeeper kick saved at the expense f a corner. However from this corner Max Smith got a decisive touch meaning that for the first time this season Winchester had scored the first two goals in a home league game.
Tommy Wright broke clear to make it 3-0 and knock the stuffing out of the visitors. After Ollie Balmer made it 4-0 with a superbly struck free kick Winchester City made three substitutions with Simba Mlambo, Ollie Griggs and Devon Arnold respectively replacing Trevor Caborn, Max Smith and Tommy Wright
It was Arnold who scored the fifth goal after being put through by Dan Jones to complete a superb victory in which after getting their noses in front they played wit greater confidence, When Bracknell attacked the Winchester City defence got in some good interceptions and always looked the team more likely to score again.
It was pleasing to achieve a victory with five different scorers and to score four goals in a single half of football for the first time.
Winchester have now won two home games in a row against teams in the top half of the table which is very welcome considering the home results prior to this and withy a 2=- lead for only the second time in the league this season this was followed up by good quality goals, but it is important that in a tough competitive league they build on this.
