Winchester City obtained a useful away point against an AFC Totton team that are just outside the playoffs, but could climb to fourth if they won their games in hands. They are managed by Jimmy Ball, son of Footballing legend Alan Ball and have the best goal difference in the division. They also enjoyed good runs in both F A Cup and F A Trophy. Earlier in the season they won 6-0 at Winchester so this represented an improved performance by Winchester.
Winchester announced an unchanged starting line-up from the tea that beat Bracknell 5-0 with the only changes being that shirt numbers of Trevor Caborn and Ollie Balmer were reversed and Stuart Mott replaced Conor Lynch on the substitutes bench.
In a tight first half Winchester certainly came the closest to scoring with both Trevor Caborn and Josh McCormick forcing good saves from former Winchester goalkeeper Lewis Noice in the home goal and Dan Jones shooting narrowly wide with a powerful strike, In the game's first period Winchester goalkeeper Luke Cairney was not seriously tested with the home team putting in a few crosses which were either intercepted by the Winchester defence or did not reach their targets, although they still looked dangerous at times.
After the goalless first half Winchester certainly stepped up a gear after the break with Max Smith come close on a couple of occasions before 10 minutes into the half Dan Jones gave Winchester the lead with a well executed lob. After the goal Trevor Caborn had a shot deflected just wide, but the home team had their best chance of the game when Scott Rendell a player who had scored 34 goals in his 118 football league appearances headed just wide when well placed.
Winchester made their first substitutions of the afternoon with Devon Arnold replacing Ollie Balmer and Stuart Mott replacing the injured Pip Nolan. Shon after coming ibn Arnold forced a further save from Noice, but in the 78th minute Rendell who hit a hat-tri ck in the fixture at Winchester made no mistake with his header this time.
The substitutions that the home team side seemed to breathe new life into the home side and they looked particularly dangerous on the right flack. However although Winchester had to do well at times to keep them out and Sam Magri that went just wide Winchester who bought on Simba Mlambo for Tommy Wright shortly after the equalizer certainly still had their moments of attacking play with Caborn shooting just wide on one occasion.
However there was no addition to the score and after 7 minutes of added time in the second half in front of a crowd of 1320 which was comfortably the best in the division that the match finished all square which was probably a fair reflection of the game.
Winchester are at home to Swindon Supermarine oln Tuesday weather permitting and at home to Hayes and Yeading on Saturday.
