Winchester's excellent away league form which had seen them lose only one of their eleven league games saw them disappointingly lose 5-1 to a Sholing team who had moved ahead of them in the table last week and moved four points ahead of them with this victory, although Winchester have four games in hand and this was their first defeat in eight league games.
Sholing recently appointed the experienced Paul Doswell as manager. Doswell achieved three promotions with Eastleigh to get them into the National League South, two promotions with Sutton United to get them into the National League and Havant and Waterlooville to the National League South playoffs. Doswell's son Conor had a very brief spell as part of Winchester's management team.
Winchester made one change to their starting line-up from from the team that played Gosport on New Year's Day with Ryan Pryce replacing the suspended Luke Cairney in goal, with exactly the same five substitutes as for the Gosport natch. Sholing had two former Winchester players in their starting line-up in goalkeeper Ryan Gosney and Alex MacAllister in their starting line-up with a third Rob Flooks on the bench.
Early on a cross from Charlie Davis saw a Dan Mason header blocked by a Winchester defender and then saved by Pryce, while at the other end Trevor Caborn had two efforts one off target and one comfortably saved by Gosney, but there was not much goalmouth action until the 18th minute when a cross from Marvin McLean was flicked on by Brad Targett for Dan Mason to score.
Shortly after the goal an excellent goal line clearance denies Brad Targett and Ryan Pryce also makes a good save to deny Luke Chalwell in a one on one situation, but Winchester had attacks of their own and Caborn had a shot that was narrowly wide.
While the score remained 1-0 once sensed that Winchester's resilience and ability to come from behind to obtain pints which has served them so well this season might again come to the fore, but unfortunately they conceded two goals in quick succession with both of the goals coming from set pieces.
Firstly Chalwell headed home Charlie Davis's corner which was flicked on by Targett and then Davis was provider again when Targett headed home his free kick three minutes later, It was then 3-0 with Targett having played a part in all three goals. Towards the end of the half Pryce makes a double save to deny McAllister, but at 3-0 down at the interval Winchester have a lot to do to get back in the game.
Right at the end of the first half Winchester replaced the injured Mark Jamison and at the start of the second half they replaced captain Jamie Barron with Ollie Griggs.
To their credit Winchester started the second half well and had far more possession than the home team. Max Smith, Josh McCormick and Caborn all forced saves from Gosney, with the save to deny McCormick being a particularly good one. It was somewhat against the run of play when the home team broke away to score their fourth with Dan Mason putting MacAllister through to score. Two minutes later Winchester pull a goal back when a penalty was awarded for a foul by Gosney and this is converted by Pip Nolan.
Although Tommy Wright has an effort that was just off target and they made their third substitution of the afternoon with Devon Arnold replacing Dan Jones they were unable to get back in the game and right at the start of six minutes of added on time Targett set up Dan Mason to score his team's fifth and his second of the afternoon.
Winchester are away to Poole this Tuesday and away to Walton and Hersham on Saturday. The following Tuesday they are at home to Didcot.
