Winchester went into this match with Tiverton having only won one of the eight previous league games and having yet to beat them on home soil. However they did on Tuesday finally achieve their first home win against Tiverton, coming from 1-0 behind at the interval to achieve success and move inti the top half of table above Sholing.
Tiverton earlier this season replaced long standing manager Martyn Rogers with Leigh Robinson who was manager of Taunton Town in 2017/18 when they were promoted to this level of football, when certainly the football they played against us that season was impressive. They moved out of the relegation zone on Saturday with a 4-2 victory against Poole and their results on their travels this season include a 4-30 victory at Sholing. However Hayes and Yeading's victory on Tuesday means they return to the bottom four.
Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Saturday with the injured pair of Harry Nevins and Josh McCormick being replaced by Pip Nolan and Stuart Mott. IK Hill who has been playing for Hartley Wintney on dual registration and Dan Jones returned to the Winchester substitutes bench.
Tiverton took the lead in the 15th minute through Joe Parker. Winchester though had a good chance to draw level when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Ollie Balmer, but Zac Baker made an excellent save from the spot kick taken by Pip Nolan who had scored from the spot in the away games against Sholing and Walton and Hersham. During the first half Luke Cairney made excellent saves from Jack Rice-Letheby and River Allen, while at the othl er end Tommy Wright and Ollie Balmer had efforts that were just off target.
Although Tiverton were dangerous on the break and with height at the back were difficult to break down Winchester had the better of the second half.although they did not create many clear cut chances until midway through the half when I K Hill shortly after replacing Jamie Barron set up Tommy Wright who made space for himself to score with a well executed and powerful shot.
With eight minutes to go Pip Nolan got a decisive touch to an Ollie Balmer free kick. Winchester survived the odd scare after that, although they still looked dangerous as an attacking force. They also bought on Simba Mlambo and Dan Jones as second half substitutes to replace Ollie Balmer and Tommy Wright respectively. Before going off Wright who was fouled for the free kick which led to Winchester's second goal had an effort that was just wide,, while at the other end a free kick from Rice-Latheby was only fractionally over the cross bar,
After the frustration of seeing Tiverton coming from behind to win last season's corresponding match 2-1 with two late goals and Didcot also coming from behind to win on this ground last week with a last minute goal, it was particularly welcome to come from behind to win 2-1 with two second half goals ourselves was particularly welcome, in the match between previous winners of the F A Vase.
Tuesday was also the birthday of Eloise Henderson who works behind the bar at Winchester and the win was a nice birthday present for her.
