After achieving back to back wins to move into the top half pf the table Winchester suffered a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of league leaders Chesham United who went into this match having obtained 16 points from their last 6 league games. As a result of this win Chesham move four points clear at the top of the table, while Winchester remain 11th in the table.
Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Tuesday with Simba Mlambo replacing Trevor Caborn and Jack Torniainen replacing Danny King. King's absence meant that neither of the regular full backs, the other of which was Josh McCormick featured. There was though a welcome return to the substitute bench for Mark Jamison who was returning from injury/
Before the game there was a minute's applause for Russell Harper, a former manager of the club who recently died. Harper had in his playing career had represented the England under 18 team.
In the first minute of the game Luke Cairney in the Winchester goal had to make an excellent save to deny Ogochukwu Obi and Obi also had a powerful shot that was just off target early in the game. However quarter of an hour into the game Chesham did take the lead when Ricardo German followed up after Cairney had saved Bradley Clayton's initial effort.
In the remainder of the half Cairney made two excellent saves, with the second of these right at the end of the half =from a Steve Brown header being particularly worthy of note. The Winchester defence made some good blocks in the first half, but although they tried hard to get some attacks going they did not really trouble Zaki Oualah in the visitors goal.
Winchester could easily have been more than 1-0 down at the break, but having in the last three matches between the clubs come from 1-0 to obtain two draws and a win, the hope remained that they could repeat these achievements. These hopes were heightened early in the second half early in the second half when they came close to drawing level when an effort from Simba Mlambo following a Jamie Barron corner hit the top of the cross bar.
However, Chesham did make it 2-0 in the 62ns minute when Callum Adebiyi picked up the loose ball following a free kick that Cairney could only partially save. In the 81st minute it became 3-0 when Obi got on the end of a cross from the left from Alexander Lafleur. With Lafleur's former club Nuneaton Borough resigning from the Southern League he has been a valuable addition to their squad and he certainly provided an excellent cross for the third goal.

Winchester introduced all three substitutes during the second half, with I K Hill, Dan Jones and Henry Brooks respectively replacing Torniainen, Ollie Griggs and Tommy Wright. However once Winchester fell further behind in the game's second period it was always going to be difficult to get back in the game against an in form team who had good travelling support.
Winchester have still won more league games than they have lost and they hope this is still the case after their home match against Swindon Supermarine on Tuesday and trip to Tiverton on Saturday.
