For the second time this season Winchester City and Hanwell Town finished all square as Winchester maintained their place at the top half of the table, while Hanwell who are below them in the table, but above the relegation places went into this match having won their last three games on the road, and scored three goals in each of these victories. Hanwell are nicknamed the Geordies because of their Newcastle connections and ironically the Winchester chairman Ken Raisbeck is also a keen Newcastle United fan.
n a fairly uninspiring game Winchester and Hanwell shared the points for the second time this season with the result meaning that despite being in the top half of the table with more wins than losses this was only Winchester's second home point in seven Saturday fixture4s fixtures this season.
Winchester made three changes to the starting line-up from the team that played against Swindon Supermarine 10 days ago, with Dan Jones, Jordan Rose and Trevor Caborn coming in for Ollie Griggs, Pip Nolan and Simba Mlambo all of whom dropped to the bench.
Early on Dan Jones just failed to get a decisive touch to a cross from I K Hill cross, while Tommy Wright hed4ed just over. HA significant part of Hanwell's game was the long throws of Mat MacKenzie and they also were able to make long passes across the pitch and Jacob Bancroft came close for them. Aaron Buftom in the Hanwell goal made a good save to deny K Hill, but in drizzly conditions the game lacked a certain amount of fluency
Winchester though generally had more of the game than Hanwell in the first half and it was against the run of play when Hanwell took the the lead in the 41st minute when Isaac Olorunfemi's shot went in past a crows of player, with MacKenzie and Dwayne Duncan involved in the move leading to the goal.s. However after taking the lead Hanwell came close to scoring a second on a couple of occasions before half time., with Luke Cairney making one particularly
At the interval Winchester bought Simba Mlambo for Tommy Wright and although Mlambo held the ball up well and Trevor Caborm made so,me menacing runs on the right hand side they struggled to break down a resolute Hanwell defence and had to thank their goalkeeper Luke Cairney for making an excellent save from Mathew MacKenzie who was clean through to deny Hanwell a second.
Winchester finally drew level in the 82nd minute through substitute Simba Mlambo with the referee playing advantage after Winchester had a strong claim for a penalty in the build up to the goal. Winchester looked the team more likely to win the game after drawing level, but Cairney made a further good save to deny Roger James and overall a draw was probably a fair result.
After Tuesday's game at Poole Winchester are away to Harrow Borough on Saturday and are away to Tiverton the following Tuesday.
