Winchester achieved their first ever win against Harrow Borough and moved up to ninth in the table as a result. Harrow Borough were reprieved from relegation last season having finished in the relegation places, but although second from bottom went into this match having obtained 7 points from their last 3 games with their 2 wins being a home success against third placed Gosport and an away victory against an improving Swindon Supermarine side.
Harrow had beaten Winchester 2-1 away from home earlier in the season, and had in the other three previous games between the clubs obtained one win and two draws. Saturday's victory moved Winchester up to 8th in the table, but if they had lost they would have still been in unusual position of being in the top half of the table with ns many wins as losses and yet being beaten homme and away by the bottom two teams in the division. However fortunately that scenario did not arise and Winchester were victorious on their travels for the seventh time this season.
Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from the previous Saturday with Ollie Balmer replacing Tommy Wright and Pip Nolan replacing Stuart Mott. Mott was on a substitutes bench that also included Devon Arnold returning from injury and new forward Sam Ashton who joins the club from Salisbury having recently been playing in Australia.
Winchester started off the brighter of the teams with Ollie Balmer and I K Hi;l; who was put through by Max Smith having shots saved. Winchester though with Jamie Barron marshalling the midfield well were using the flanks well with Trevor Caborn and I K Hill looking menacing, but it was a cross from Josh McCormick that set up Winchester's first goal in the 20th minute with OLlie Balmer's effort going into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
Winchester almost again when Caborn crossed for I K Hill who forced a good save from Tyler Tobin in the home goal. Tobin also made another good save from Balmer who was set up by Dan Jones, while another dangerous run by Cabormn was cut out at the expense of a corner.
Winchester had in the game's first period kept Harrow attacks to a minimum and would have been disappointed not to have gone into half time more than one goal ahead.
Winchester though did not have to wait too long to score their second in the second half with another good run by Caborm presenting Balmer with a simpl tap in, although Balmer made sure he was in the iight position to convert the chance. Five minutes later though were back in the game when a goalmouth scramble resulted in James Gurteen scoring. Harrow tried to build on the goal and tried to find the equalizer, but they seldom troubled Luke Cairney in the Winchester goal and it is it was the visitors who had the better chances in the remainder of the game.
Shortly after Harrow pulled a goal back Winchester made two substitutions with Ashton replacing I K Hill and Ollie Griggs coming on for Dan Jones shortly afterwards.
Winchester came very close to scoring a third when Caborn's effort was saved, with Ashton following up almost making an immediate impact, with his effort cleared off the line, but the ball was not cleared and CAborn following up had his deflected for a corner.
Max Smith who was later replaced by Stuart Mott as Winchester's third substitution the afternoon shot just wide, but in the end it was a valuable win for Winchester who scored the first goal of the game for the first time in five fixtures.
Winchester are at home to Merthyr Town on Saturday and away to Plymouth Parkway on the following Tuesday.
