orchester made a slow start to the season and early in the campaign Winchester beat them 4-0 ay Dorchester, but under the management of Tommy their fortunes have very much improved and they went into this match having obtained 25 points from their last 12 league games and been unbeaten in all six away games in 2-0024. As a player Killick scored twice in helping Wimborne in the 1992 RF A Vase final, and also played for Dorchester, while as a manager he was a long serving manager or Poole Town whom he left earlier in the season having guided them inti the playoffs in the previous season.
A few new signings have been made to improve their fortunes and they recently recruited Harry Redknapp junior the grandson of the Harry Redknapp who was a well known football player and manager..
Winchester made four changes to the starting line-up from the previous Saturday's game at Hendon with Ollie Balmer, Ollie Griggs, Jordan Rose and I K Hill replacing Sam Ashton, Dan Jones, Stuart Mott and Simba Mlambo all of whom were on a substitutes bench that also included Tommy Wright. Griggs and Balmer who were on the substitutes bench at Hendon were both playing against their former clubs,
After the recent weather it was a pleasant contrast to watch football in sunshine. Although neither goalkeeper had to make a save of note in the first 20 minutes Dorchester had more of the game's early stages. Midway through the first half Will Spetch came close after getting on the end of a free kick taken by Marcus Daws. Six minutes later Dorchester took the lead when Shaquille Gwengwe scored from a narrow angle having followed up after Will Fletcher's initial shot was saved,
Trevor Caborn came close to scoring an equalizer after getting on the end of a free kick and Winchester had a couple of further attacks that were kept out by some good blocking by the Dorchester defence. At the other end Luke Cairney had to make a good save from Jordan Ngalo. However it was 2-0 at the interval with Winchester havintg pace up front, but finding a solid Dorchester team difficult to break down.
At half time Simba Mlambo replaced I K Hill. Fifteen minutes into the second half a foul by a Dorchester player led to a Winchester free kick. Before the free kick was taken there was a melee involving several players that saw Dorchester's Will Spetch given a red card and Winchester's Max Smith a yellow card. Balmer though struck a superb free kick which flew into the net. For Balmer the fact that he was a former Dorchester player and would have played under Killick at Pole the goal had abn added significance.
After drawing level Balmer had another chance but this time his effort was off target. Jameson Horlick in the Dorchester goal then makes a good save to deny Trevor Caborn, but Dorchester certainly reminded Winchester that they were still a threat as an attacking force when Cairney had to make a good save to keep out an effort from Will Fletcher.
Winchester bring on Dan Jones for Max Smith and Sam AShton for Ollie Balmer in an effort to find the winner,m but although Caborn and Josh McCormick had off target efforts and the Dorchester defence had to make at least important block they were unable to score again and Dorchester continued to look dangerous on the break although it is perhaps to fair to say that in the latter stages of the game the delivery of a couple of their set pieces certainly left room for improvement.
The crowd of 497 which included a sizeable contingent of Dorchester fans some of whom wore pointed hats to celebrate the 60th birthday of one of their colleagues bought Winchester's aggregate attendance for the last four games up a healthy 2711.
I would like to wish Dorchester's Corby Moore who had to go off injured in the game a speedy recovery.
Winchester are at home to Hungerford on Saturday and away to Poole on the following Tuesday.
