For the second time in four days Winchester went down to an away defeat at the hands of a team who they beaten convincingly at ho,me as they went down 3-1 to Bracknell.
Despite the defeat Winchester remain in 11th position, while Bracknell are sixth, behind fifth placed Merthyr Town whom Winchester play on Tuesday having played one game more in the battle for the final playoff place.
Earlier in the year Bracknell appointed Jordan Ive as manager earlier in 20024 and their results certainly seemed to have improved since Winchester played them last year with this being their 6th victory in 8 games and their 4th in a row on home soil. Bracknell actually play a few miles outside Bracknell at Sandhurst and certainly Winchester manager Craig Davis acknowledges that they are a good team.
Winchester made four changes to the starting eleven from Tuesday with Stuart Mott, Dan Jones, Sam Ashton and Mark Jamison coming into the side, with the first named on being the substitutes bench at Poole, They replaced Jordan Rose, Ollie Griggs. I K Hill and Simba Mlambo with the first three named being on a substitutes bench that also included Devon Arnold.
Although Bracknell's Haydon Vaughan had a free kick deflected for a corner early on Winchester exerted a lot of pressure in the first quarter of an hour and it required some good defensive play by the home team to keep them out and it was somewhat against the run of play when they fell behind in the 18th minute when Ralph Vigrass put Bracknell ahead.
Despite going behind Winchester continued to press and Michael Eacott in the home goal makes a couple of good saves to keep them out, while Nark Jamison heads just wide. Jamison is also in action at the other end when he makes a block to keep Bracknell out with Luke Cairney in the Winchester goal also making a good save to deny Bracknell a second.
Bracknell sent Winchester a warning that they were dangerous on the break and they scored a second 10 minutes before the break when a cross from Vaughan was converted by Ive Evans. Therefore despite playing a lot of good football in the first half Winchester were 2-0 behind at the break.
Three minutes into the second half Winchester were thrown a lifeline when Sam Ashton's header hit the bar and Dan King followed up to score. It was King's second goal of the season as he had also netted at Hendon. However six minutes later the two goal advantage was restored when Jordan Espirit converted a penalty.
Winchester still kept pressing and Sam Ashton had a couple of off target efforts. During the final quarter of an hour Winchester make two substitutions to try and get back in the game with Caborn and Jones to players going off and replaced by I K Hill and Devon Arnold,. Eacott then makes his best save of the match to prevent Arnold from pulling a goal back and try as they did Winchester were unable to pull goal back.
After the midweek game against Merthyr and Tiverton Winchester are at home to Beaconsfield on Saturday.
