Winchester achieved another excellent victory as they beat Hayes and Yeading 3-0, thus avenging their heaviest away defeat of the season and are now in touching distance of safety. There is no doubt that having won their last two home matches withn seven goals scored and none against teams in the top half of the table Winchester are beginning to find their feet on home territory with the combination of Simba Mlambo, Warren Bentley and Simba Mlambo in attacking roles making them morte dangerous going forward.
Despite Hartley Wintney and Yate picking up points over the weekend, neither of them nor Harrow Borough can catch Winchester leaving North Leigh as the only team in the bottom four who can catch Winchester and they are ten points behind with an inferior goal difference and with only four matches ti go then if Winchester's result at Salisbury equals or betters North Leigh's result at home to Swindon Supermarine on Monday then they are safe.
Hayes and Yeading a former National League club were losing playoff finalists and were on the fringe of the playoffs this season, but this defeat leaves them 10 points short of the playoff positions despite the fact that going into this match having just beaten Bracknell Town who still maintain an outside chance of winning the league title. One of their best known players is Moises Emmanuel who has played for several non-league clubs including Eastleigh and he scored the second goal in the first match between the clubs this season.
Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Tuesday with Charlie Philpott returning to the goalkeeper position in place of Ryan Pryce. They made a very good start to the game with an excellent ball from Ollie Balmer setting up Warren Bentley who made no mistake in the 6th minute.
Winchester continued the pressure after the goal with Bentley having two further efforts saved and Robert Jamison coming close with a header, and they defended well whenever the visitors attacked.
Hayes and Yeading were reduced to 10 men when Jean-Baptiste Fischer, a former youth team captain with Paris ST Germain received a second yellow card with his second booking for a challenge which led to Pip Nolan going off injured and being replaced by Archie Willcox.
With a man advantage Winchester continued to be in the ascendancy with Jamie Barron, Danny King and Simba Mlambo having efforts saved. However the closest they came to scoring a second goal in the first half was when Barron's effort hit the inside of the post. At the end of the first half the visitors had their first meaningful shot of the game, but Charlie Philpott made a good save from Emmanuel's effort, but to end the half Bentley forced a further save from Hayes and Yeading goalkeeper Simon Grant.
Philpott made a further good save from substitute Daniel Green who was bought on as the visitors regrouped in an effort to get back in the game. At the other end Grant saved well in a one on one situation with Bentley.
However in the 71st minute Winchester got the all important second goal when I K Hill who had only just replaced Jack Torniainen was able to get a decisive touch following a Danny King long throw.
Winchester made their third and final substitution with Ollie Griggs replacing Simba Mlambo and they continued to pres with Max Smith having a shot saved and Ollie Balmer having a further effort that hit the post.
However it was then the turn of Hayes and Yeading to hit the woodwork through Moses Emmanuel and a goalmouth scramble sees Philpott make a further save and the Winchester defence doing well to clear the ball as the visitors seek a goal that would have set up an interesting finale.
However in the first of four minutes of added on time Winchester score the third when Warren Bentley makes sure that Jamie Barron's goalbound effort which was a follow up effort after his initial shot was saved is over the line.
After travelling to Salisbury on Easter Monday, Winchester play their final home match of the season when Hanwell are the visitors.
Before the match a minute's applause in memory of Lyn Bone, who was wife of former club president Terry Bone was observed. Lyn was a great support to Terry and did a lot of valuable work for the club especially in its' more difficult days when its' future was in doubt.
