or the 7th time in 10 seasons Winchester reached the 2nd round proper of the F A Cup as they beat Evesham United 3-2 despite playing half an hour of the second half with only 10 men after Max Smith received a straight red card on his return to the league.
Evesham are a club who currently play in the league that Winchester were promoted out of in 2021/22 and last season reached the playoffs of that division for the 4th time in 7 completed seasons. Previous matches between the clubs had seen seven wins each and one draw.
Evesham are currently managed by Mike Ford who who previously made nearly 500 appearances in the football league with Cardiff City and Oxford United and previously managed Oxford City and Banbury United. His first season at Banbury was 2015/16 when they played Winchester three times om their way to achieving promotion in the playoffs.
Winchester made three changes to the starting line-up from Monday with Jamie Barron, Max Smith and Trevor Caborn coming in for I K Hill.Ollie Griggs and Warren Bentley with Hill and Griggs among the seven substitutes which also included Danny King.
Early on Caborn set up Archie Willcox whose effort was saved by the Evesham goalkeeper.but Winchester did take the lead in the 13th minute when Max Smith set up Dan Jones to score. Jones has only recently been given a starting berth in successive games and he has certainly taken his chance,
At the other end the Evesham centre forward had a chance, but was unable to direct his effort goalwads. Winchester immediately counter attacked, but Dan Jones shot straight at the Evesham goalkeepe. Smith also set up Balmer whose effort was saved, but after a good first half Winchester went into the interval 1-0 in the ascendancy.
Two minutes into the second half Winchester extended their lead when Ollie Balmer chased down a ball, with the goalkeeper's attempt to clear it seeing the ball hitting Balmer and ending up in the net. Balmer came close following a corner, but was unable to direct his effort on target.
Both goalkeepers were then forced into action in quick succession with Charlie Philpott saving with his legs and Balmer forcing a save from the Evesham goalkeeper.
Evesham however pull a goal back from the penalty spot in the 58th minute with Levi Steele converting the spot kick and three minutes later Max Smith is given a straight red card for a challenge that is deemed to be late.
Having pulled a goal back and with an extra man Evesham were at that stage sensing they were very much back in the game at Winchester responded by replacing Trevor Caaorn with Ollie Griggs and Dan Jones with Jordan Rose. However soon after the substitutions were made Evesham drew level.
Soon after the equalizer Winchester made a third substitution with Tommy Wright replacing Conor Lynch. Despite Wright coming close to scoring The game seemed to heading for a replay until Winchester score a third in the 5th of 6 minutes of added on time with a long throw by Pip Nolan bouncing around in the Evesham area and Archie Willcox putting away the loose ball. This is the second consecutive match in which Winchester have scored an important goal late in added on time with Willcox involved in both goals.
Winchester are away to Didcot on Saturday.
