season relegated from the National League South where they spent seven seasons and are managed by former Winchester manager Danny Robinson. Although the clubs had recently played each other in pre-season friendlies the last competitive fixture between the two clubs was a league cup tie in 2015/16, with the teams also both playing in the same division of the Southern League in 2012/13.
It was the seventh successive season that Winchester had been eliminated from the competition by a former Hellenic League club and Hungerford progress in a competition in which they reached the fifth round proper last season.
Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Tuesday with Max Smith replacing Warren Bentley. Bentley who like goalkeeper Luke Cairney was a former Hungerford player was on the substitutes bench.
The first 15 minutes was fairly uneventful with not much goalmouth activity, but with almost the first notable attack of the game Hungerford scored when Matt Berry-Hargreaves head4ed home following a corner. However Winchester drew level eight minutes later when Tommy Wright was on hand to score after Trevor Caborn's initial effort was saved. The goal gave Winchester confidence and they had more possession than the visitors, although they did not give the experienced Ryan Clarke in the Salisbury goal anything more than routine saves to make/ Clarke now 41 years of age has 225 football league appearances to his name and has played locally for Salisbury and Eastleigh.
However the first half was held up for several minutes through an accidental collision between Winchester's Trevor Caborn and Hungerford's Jack Stanley which led to booth players leaving the field with Caborn being replaced by Simba Mlambo. Caborn certainly received a nasty injury and manager Craig Davis was rightly full of concern for his player's welfare, but it did seem that Stanley came off worse and had to be stretchered off and taken to Winchester Hospital. Reports on the Hungerford twitter feed indicated that he is now talking and eating with the club acknowledging the efforts of Winchester City football club in trying to help their injured player.
Winchester made a promising start to the second half with an effort from I K Hill hitting the top of the cross bar. However Hungerford regained the lead when Conor McDonagh broke clear of the home defence ans slotted home. McDonagh who had a chance to score in the first half, with his effort going wide has a habit of scoring against Winchester, having done so three different games last season including the F A Trophy while a Swindon Supermarine player. Again it did not take Winchester long to draw level with Pip Nolan converting a penalty awarded for a foul on Simba Mlambo.
After an even passage of play Hungerford gained the lead for a third time though Elis Watts and it became 4-2 when McDonagh scored from the penalty spot.
Winchester had introduced Warren Bentley and Conor Lynch as their second and thirds substitutes of the afternoon and as the eight minutes of second half additional time began goalkeeper Luke Cairney began to move up for set pieces. There was renewed home for Winchester when Tommy Wright scored in the second minute of added on time, but with Winchester pushing pushing men forward they were caught on the break with Elis Watts scoring his second goal of the game, in the sixth minute of additional time.
Winchester are away to Hanwell on Saturday.
Manager Craig Davis has signed a new contract with the club to the end of 2024/25, while full back Callum Baughan has left the club to join Bashley
