Despite a good battling performance and an excellent goal by Tommy Wright Winchester went down 2-1 to second placed Gosport Borough who scored two goals in the last 10 minutes to clinch victory. Having previously obtained two victories and two draws in away games against teams in the top five, and they came close to completing the set of unbeaten games in theses fixtures, but inspired substitutions led to increased pressure by the home side which paid dividends for them.
Gosport went into this match in second place and they remained in that position after this victory, but they have no chance of catching ;leaders Chesham who are now certain of the title. They have a young management team who have certainly transformed the club's fortunes after the disappointing 2022/23 campaign. Despite Friday's surprised defeat at Basingstoke they went into this match having won three of their last four league marches.
The match attracted an attendance of 1138b which continues the upturn in peeing Winchester play to a cumulative total of 38448 for the last 5 games. Gosport had organised a reunion for former players and there was a good turnout for hat including former managers and players of the club.
Winchester made four changes to starting line-up from Saturday with Simba Mlambo, Stuart Mott, Tommy Wright and Dan Jones replacing i K Hill, Jordan Rose, Ollie Balmer and Ollie Griggs with Hill, Balmer and Griggs on a substitutes hat also included Sam Ashton and Mark Jamison.
At the start Gosport used their overlapping wing backs to e good effect with \Kristian Campbell putting one cross that no-one could on the end of.Harry Kavanagh producing cross that led to a bicycle kick by Gerson Da Costa Ramos that was well saved by Luke Cairney and from a further cross by Kavanagh Dan Wooden hit the post. However Winchester came more into the game with Trevor Caborn shooting narrowly wide, Simba Mlambo deflected for a corner and the pace of Caborn and Mlambo keeping the home side's defence on their toes.
IN the latter stages of the first half both teams mostly cancelled each other out, but it required a great block by Stuart Mott to keep out a Gosport attack, However the first half was goalless and so there was everything very much to play for in the games's second period.
Winchester though made a bright start to the second half and they took the lead in the 51st minute through Tommy Wright who scored with an excellently struck effort which went in off the post. It was a well taken goal by Wright who had come close once in the first half and was making his first start for over six weeks.
Winchester lost the influential Caborn through injury, but his replacement Ollie Balmer almost made a quick impact crossing for Wright whose effort hit the post.
Winchester also replaced Wright with Sam Ashton and Ollie Griggs replacing Jamie Barron. They were defending well and also looking dangerous on the break at times.
However Gosport upped the tempo when substitutes Antonio Diaz, Alfie Stanley and Harvey Rew were introduced. They forced several corners and from one of these they drew level with Diaz's corner was flicked on by Corey Jordan for Stanley who had earlier hit the postto score. Shortly afterwards Bradley Tarbuck made it 2-1 with an excellently struck effort.
Despite falling behind late in the game Winchester kept plugging away trying to find an equalizer and Balmer was only just off target with a free kick and right and the end Cairney came up for set pieces.
