Hi all,
Can anyone on here please tell me what the official club badge is?
On last season's player shirts, and on the club's X, Instagram and Youtube channels, I see that a badge with 'founded 1884' on it is used.
On the club's website (and Wikipedia too though of course this is independent) is the different badge with no reference to the date of foundation.
I think it highly unusual that there appears to be a new badge that is not used on most of the club's other sites.
Has the badge with date of foundation only just been created (and will soon be used on all your sites)?
Alternatively, do the different badges point to a difference within the club regarding its date of forming?
On the club history page I see the text:
Winchester City were formed in 1891 as Winchester Swallows FC. In 1894 they changed their name to Winchester F.C. (another Winchester F.C. had existed between 1884 and 1893). A further name change happened in 1907 when they became Winchester City F.C.
An older version of your history (from an older version of your website) is:
The Winchester Football Club was founded in 1884 as a result of the endeavours of two residents of the city... The football club, which had strong links with Winchester College, made quite an impact in the early years of association football in Hampshire.... However financial difficulties, combined with the indifference of Winchester residents, led to the 1884 club folding in 1893.
The decline of the city’s most high-profile club left a void that was subsequently to be filled by the Winchester Swallows FC. Formed in 1891, the Swallows were less socially exclusive than the 1884 club and had a membership more reflective of that of Winchester as a whole. The club changed its name to Winchester FC at the start of the start of the 1894/95 season, and again in 1907 when it became Winchester City FC.
So, as an outsider, the club has twice mentioned that Winchester Swallows FC was formed in 1891. (The Wikipedia page says that Winchester Swallows FC was formed in 1884 but failed to provide a reference for this so cannot be considered reliable.) And the common belief is that Winchester Swallows is the club that exists today (and not the Winchester FC that formed in 1884).
Sorry to be a pain but am I correct in sensing a lack of agreement (perhaps between fans and board, but I am guessing here)?
What is the club's official badge at this time?
Why do many people say that the club was formed in 1884 - surely 1884 is the date of formation of another long defunct team in the city.
I notice that some clubs determine their date of founding to be the earliest date of football in the local area. Has that idea been used in the case of your team?
I hope some people on here will be able to help in any way. At least I will get the fan's opinions on the differences.
Thanks in advance
